Take Time for Fun

Take Time for Fun

Everyone needs to take time out for fun. We usually have a full schedule which leaves us no time for fun, but unless we take time out, we feel drained and overwhelmed. Don’t wait until there is free time, that might never happen. Write a date on the calendar, make an appointment with yourself to have fun. What you consider fun might not be what others think of as fun, but don’t let that discourage you. Get out there and do your own thing.

Okay, it’s time to have some fun, but what’s fun for one might not be fun for others. We can become drained and overwhelmed by constantly keeping our noses to the grindstone. Lets see, what kind of fun do we want to have? There is challenging fun which is most rewarding but is also demanding. It can be hard work and create frustration. It takes time and lots of energy. It might be learning a new language, how to play tennis, or learning how to quilt.

It’s fun, if it’s something that you enjoy, even if it’s a lot of work. Then there’s accommodating fun. That could be a family boating outing, a dinner party, or a movie with friends. This type of fun takes effort and organization, and builds memories that you can look back on with pleasure. Then, there’s relaxing fun. It takes no effort, work or organizing. It can be reading an enjoyable book, watching TV, listening to music, or closing your eyes and doing nothing.

Researchers say, challenging and accommodation fun creates more happiness over the long haul, because they have the elements that build happiness and strong personal bonds. Relaxing fun is passive. If most of our fun is relaxing fun we need to mix it up with challenging fun and accommodating fun. Relaxing fun is easy and doesn’t take much energy. Without energy, you can’t have the kind of fun that leads to happiness. That’s why energy is so important.

Many people think they don’t have time for fun. Don’t wait until you have time. Make an appointment with yourself. Take time out to make a date with your friends. Go on a family outing. Take time for a hobby you love. It might be painting, quilting, writing. ( three of my favorites) Or it might be gardening. Sure it will take some organizing and work, but it’s worth it if it’s what you love.

Not everyone has fun doing the same thing. Your friends might find fun in things that you don’t care for. Everyone has their own idea of fun. So look for something that appeals to you. Your choices are not limited, other than by your own likes and dislikes. Take time for activities you truly enjoy and don’t be intimidated by others. Doing your own thing builds energy and makes you a happy camper.

Learn to be a little silly. It can effect the whole family and cut down on bickering. Kids love it when parents do silly things. It’s infectious and brings cheerfulness into the household. There is always time for a little goofiness. And that’s fun, too.

As a human being we all like to have fun. Even our work can be fun if we know how to make our work fun activity.

I agree. Fun is as important in life as work is, and everyone should find what is most fun for them. Let’s make life fun :)

Thanks for the reminder Ruby. It is so easy for us to forget to take time out for ourselves in today’s busy lifestyle. This serves as a great reminder for all. Thanks again!

Everyone assumes there is no time for fun in todays “busy lifestyle” but we have the choice to slow down our lifestyle if we wish. People 40 years ago had more time for fun because they did not work so much to have all the crap we think we need to have today – work less – have more time for fun.

Good advice. I sometimes get caught up in tending to everyone else and forgetting to do things that I enjoy; however, lately I have been thinking – life is short, it is my time now. I enjoyed reading this article, and I plan to have more fun this year.

Taking a little time for fun now, gives you a lot more time later. It’s often hard to sacrifice your hours to just do something you enjoy that has no purpose, but it truly is so important. When we do, it refreshes us as you said, and when we’re refreshed, we’re able to get more done in a shorter amount of time.
